STONE, JOHN

Homebase: Seattle, WA
Stats:
Misc Notes: In 1960 "Jockey" John Stone moved from New Orleans to Seattle where he hired on as a dj with KJR radio. He brought along a single he'd cut on Memphis' Ace label and began promoting it on KJR. Then he took over a local band, the Adventurers, and began singing with them. He became known for being an arrogant and mean guy -- a power player who bullied local musicians and touring stars alike. When Pat O'Day was promoted over Stone at KJR, he forced Stone -- who was a terrible singer -- to accept Little Bill Engelhart into the band as a second singer. "Oh Boy! It was showtime all night with that group," Engelhart recalled. "John would be on his knees singing 'Death Of An Angel.' There would be no choreography. John wouldn't let that happen. Just a few little steps. He was the feature. I was second to him, but I didn't care." Soon, after a bit of a scandal where some touring star didn't get paid for his performance at a Stone / KJR-associated dance, the station cut Stone loose and he returned to New Orleans.
