Graves Recording Service

LOCATION: 2646 Willamette St. / P.O. 1416, Eugene, OR
OWNER(s): Alan Graves
TIMESPAN: 1960s...
MISC NOTES: As a high school-age student Alan Graves began producing audio recordings in his family's basement in the early 1960s. In 1966 he formalized the enterprise as the Graves Recording Service in a downtown building (at 2646 Willamette St.). Numerous area musicians and bands availed themselves of his service, and after their songs were recorded, they had the option of having their recordings issued by the in-house Graves record company. In a few known instances, bands opted to have their records released by outside labels, including: Star, Surf and Tork. In all cases the audio tapes were shipped off to be pressed in disc format by RCA in Hollywood, CA. In 1968, Graves launched a new label, F-Empire, but few discs were ever released on it.

ALAN GRAVES: "...most of the stuff I did was local schools, etc. – some gospel and dixieland jazz band stuff. None of the records pressed were released by me, but were the property of the individual bands – who either gave them away or sold them. Most were done in a limited press of 500 copies each.... Since the records were the property of the bands, I rarely kept any copies... I re-activated the studio by acquiring a Scully Mastering record cutting lathe and, under the name of 'The Audio Lathe,' cut lots of 'acetate' records for DJs and jukeboxes...” [Interview quote courtesy, Garage Hangover]

MISC NOTES: The Dominions's drummer, Larry Rodman, shared these recollections via YouTube: "The band was started in the fall of 1964. I heard there was a guy starting a band, so I went home and brought my drums back to campus (Morton Hall, at the time). As I was carrying them inside, Ken came by and said 'Are those yours?' I said 'Yes,' and he said, 'You're in the band!'"

"The song was written by Ken Paxton and Ron Techel. Ron sings the intro, and Ken sings the bridge. The sax player was John Peters. I believe the lead guitar was still Bob Nosler, from Bend, at that time.

"When we went over to the Graves Studio -- which at the time was in the basement of his house, Mrs Graves had to move her ironing board and laundry in order for us to set up. We made 500 copies...and sold them in record stores in Eugene and Springfield."
