Homebase: Medford, OR.
Stats: 1958-1961
Misc Notes: The 5 Shadows were an a capella quintet that was formed by the core trio of Paul Smith (lead), Tom Newcomb, and Bill Smith -- who on some occasions added others in varying lineups (a quartet, quintet, sextet) that might include additional St. Mary's High School students: Dave Mansfield, Mike Feiss and/or Rick Carrara. At the 1958 Oregon State Fair the quintet were victorious in the Oregon Jaycees' talent show. That led to an opportunity to make an appearance on a Portland television show, and in 1960 they entered that town's Northwest Recorders to cut a couple songs -- "Blue Moon" / My Love Bug"-- which were released on the Frosty label. Later that year, and as a quartet, the Shadows recorded a second single -- "Tell This Lonely Heart Goodbye" / "Wonder Why" -- which was released by the vanity label, Dottie Records. [Note: it is interesting that the name of the owner of Dottie Records was Jack Frost. It seems likely that the Frosty record company was associated with him.]

MISC NOTES: After recording this single, the 5 Shadows recorded a second one for Dottie Records under the name of the Shadows. It is interesting that the name of the owner of Dottie Records was Jack Frost. Perhaps this Frosty label was associated with him? The Myrtle Mtn. song publishing company was owned by Eugene, Oregon's musician, band-leader, and recording studio owner/operator Lloyd “Grandpappy” Smith.
