MISC NOTES: THE BURNSIDE BOMBERS - "Rose City Swan Song - During the latter 1970s if you asked anyone familiar with the music scene around the Portland, Oregon, area who the most popular rock band was, more than likely the reply would be The Burnside Bombers. From 1975 through 1980 the Rose City rock act proved to be one of he biggest draws in he local club scene, a reputation that often saw The Bombers compared with Seattle's Jr. Cadillac in terms of Northwest popularity. The Bombers story starts back in 1975 when, in the ever shifting personnel changes of Northwest musical groups, members of two relatively obscure Portland bands joined forces in a new act dedicated to playing music and having fun. The new act garnered a "humorous, but respectful" name from the Rose City's older downtown district and relied primarily on a repertoire of cover tunes. Still, The Burnside Bombers' relaxed, good-time stage presence quickly brought them to a pinnacle of public attention. "We were an energetic act", says founding Bomber Mark Bosnian, "and that energy plus our party time outlook got other people partying." One limitation to a party is that it can grow stale, a fact which saw a number of musicians move through The Burnside Bombers during their five year existence. "We lacked an over all identity in terms of our musical direction" continues Mark, "and that ultimately hurt us. The time finally came when we felt it was time to hang up The Bombers in order to explore more original musical pursuits". Before that time came The Burnside Bombers did have one opportunity to apply their talents to vinyl. Bosnian continues. "One of the last jobs we played was a club in Lincoln City, Oregon. While we were there the guy who booked us, Mike Behrens, came up and said he like done of our original tunes and wanted to record us. At first we said 'Yeah, right!! See you later', but then he booked us into Recording Associates in Portland to cut "Coconut Girl" and "Don't Stop Now" the tunes that are on the record. Commenting on these songs, Bosnian characterizes "Coconut Girl", as a mid-tempo rock tune with a "slight" reggae feel. As for "Don't Stop Now," he says the song is a very up-tempo rock number that lyrically focuses on the club scene The Burnside Bombers so often frequented.
