BRETT and the MARVELLES, STEVE

Homebase: White Center, WA.
Stats:
Misc Notes: Steve Brett was the vocalist with the Valients band from White Center (1960-1969). He also cut a "solo" single with the backing of Eddie Gatti and the Breakers (with the Marvelles). In 2008 his brother, Martin Brett, emailed the pnwbands.com website and informed that Steve died in 1996 after a bicycle accident. And that: Steve "had a 45 rpm record on the local stations for awhile while he was in high school. I think it was called “Dream Tonight”  It was recorded at the home studio of Eddie Gatti, who took an interest in Steve and then died right when it was popular, and the whole project just evaporated. I remember hearing they sold 500 copies, but there was some technical glitch in the recording that necessitated rerecording before it could be accepted by most radio stations. I suspect Steve Brett and the Marvelles was just a studio arrangement for one song, and there really wasn’t a band that had outside gigs."

MISC NOTES: On April 4, 1960,  the singer with Burien-based band, the Valients,  Steve Brett, entered Joe Boles Custom Recorders in West Seattle to make a recording sponsored by Eddie Gatti. Also present were Gatti's combo, the Breakers, and a girl-group comprised of Linda Moore and Dorothy Stewart. The result was a single that was soon released on the Hydro label. It featured the Marvelles on the A-side ("Call Me Back"), and also them backing Brett on the B-side ("Dream Tonight). Upon release, alas, Gatti suddenly passed away and the project lost all momentum.
