ELY, JACK

Homebase: Portland, OR
Stats: 1943-2015
Misc Notes: Founding member, leader, guitarist, and vocalist with the Kingsmen. A few months after exiting the band in the summer of 1963, their "Louie Louie" single became a big national hit. He responded by forming a new band: Jack Ely and the Kingsmen. Legal action against him halted that. He then began fronting Portland's Courtmen, and then the Squires. In 1976 he re-recorded "Louie Louie" with studio musicians (released on K-Tel's 1982 60's Dance Party LP and other compilations) which the Kingsmen successfully sued K-Tel over in 1983. That recording was also released on 10 Big Hits of the Rock 'n' Roll Era in 1980, and other compilations).
