Homebase: Portland, OR
Stats: 1943-2015
Misc Notes: Founding member, leader, guitarist, and vocalist with the Kingsmen. A few months after exiting the band in the summer of 1963, their "Louie Louie" single became a big national hit. He responded by forming a new band: Jack Ely and the Kingsmen. Legal action against him halted that. He then began fronting Portland's Courtmen, and then the Squires. Decades later he re-recorded "Louie Louie" with studio musicians (released on the 1982 60's Dance Party LP and other compilations) and again in 1980 (released on 10 Big Hits of the Rock 'n' Roll Era, and other compilations).
