Misc Notes: In 1955 Ronnie Height was a founding member of Seattle's first notable teenage doo-wop group, the Five Checks, which also included future band-leader and the "father of the Northwest Sound," Dave Lewis. The Five Checks performed at many local shows including opening up concerts for touring R&B stars at the Palomar Theater. When Lewis (piano) and George Griffin (drums) decided to devote more time to forming the Dave Lewis Combo, Height split for Los Angeles where he was successful in launching a solo career. One career highlight must have been the "Giant Rhythm and Blues Stage Show" concert he did on May 3, 1957, with established headliners Bobby "Blue" Bland, Little Junior Parker, the Medallions, Don & Dewey, Thurston Harris -- and Richard Berry, the man who would bring his song "Louie, Louie" to Seattle that September. In 1959 Height's quick cover version of "Come Softly To Me" by Olympia's Fleetwoods, nearly stole the hit away from them when LA radio began airing it instead of the original. Height's eventually peeked at Billboard magazine's #45, while the Fleetwoods' raced to #1. Height went on to record numerous additional pop singles, and was known to have continued performing at least as late as 2012.
