HOWARD, CHUBBY

Homebase: Tacoma, WA
Stats: (b. 6/5/1926 -- d. 12/23/2021)
Misc Notes: Ray "Chubby" Howard was born in Goose Rock, Kentucky, and in the 1930s his father bought him a Silvertone steel guitar for $65. “When I got it back [to Kentucky] we just barely got electricity,” he once recalled, “and I plugged that thing in and it made all kinds of noise.” Then, after serving in WWII, Howard took up the pedal steel guitar and ended up falling into the Tacoma country music scene in the 1950s, playing live, and working as a radio DJ on Lakewood's KFHA-AM, as well as Tacoma's KMO and Puyallup's KAYE. Howard also hosted KTNT's Country Jubilee program. In the 1970s he toured widely with Steve Lake & the Swingmasters. He was inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in 2015.
