Misc Notes: A Class of 1958 graduate of Olympia High School. Troxel had been a trumpeter with the school orchestra when he was recruited by two classmates - Gretchen Christopher and Barbara Ellis - to accompany them for a performance at a talent show. After a few practice sessions they opted to perform a new doo-wop song they'd written - "Come Softly To Me" - and their fellow students reacted so positively that they ended up recording a version at the Yantis Studio in Olympia. Long story short: after cutting the song again up in Seattle, it was released by a new Seattle-base label and it began an overnight global No. 1 radio hit. Numerous additional hits followed, but in 1965 Troxel was called to serve his time in the Navy. This news disappointed their fans to the extent that some young Pittsburgh, PA, musicians - Lugee & the Lions (featuring Lou Christie) went into a studio there and backed a teen singer named Marcie Jo (Sockel) while recording a tribute song: "Since Gary Went In The Navy." Following that another pop singer, Roberta Wynn, also cut a version of the tune.
