Name Also Shown As Wild Knights

The Wilde/Wild Knights  hailed from Longview, Washington and formed out of a previous group, the Furys (See FURYS [II], THE). After doing a club residency in San Francisco, as the Pipers (or Pipers IV) they moved to Los Angeles, and then returned to Longview. Regrouping with a British immigrant bassist, Rick Dey, their full lineup consisted of: Rich Brown (guitar), Ray Kennedy (organ), and Roger Huycke (drums), the band then changed their name to the Wilde Knights and headed back to California.

In 1965 the Wilde Knights teamed up with producer Paul Johnson to record two singles for his Star-Bright label. The first was "Tossin' and Turnin' "/ "Beaver Patrol." "Beaver Patrol", penned by Dey and Brown, contained sexually suggestive lyrics. They also wrote "Just Like Me", which became  the B-side of their second Star-Bright single. That same year the band opened concerts for the Rolling Stones and Byrds, as they also did for the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Sonny and Cher and Paul Revere & the Raiders. In 1965 The Raiders scored a smash hit with "Just Like Me", but the song's authorship was credited to their manager, Roger Hart. The Wilde Knights' single, backed with "I Don't Care", got picked up by a Los Angeles label, Modern Records.

After the Wilde Knights, the lineup evolved into Genesis, King Biscuit Entertainers, and American Cheese. All of these groups  released singles in the mid to late '60s or early 1970s.

The Wilde Knights have become highly regarded amongst garage rock enthusiasts. Many  regard two of the their songs "Just Like Me", and "Beaver Patrol," to be classics in the genre.

"Just Like Me"and "Beaver Patrol" are featured on the Pebbles, Volume 1 LP and CD, as well as the Pebbles Box and Trash Box compilations
.
The Wilde Knights' complete recordings, along with tracks they cut as the Furys, the Piper IV, Genesis and King Biscuit Entertainers can be found on the compilation album  The Wilde Knights A.K.A. Furys, Pipers IV, Etc. (Voxx Record Co., Ltd.VOXX 200.026 (1984).

MISC NOTES: Rick Dey and his band the Wilde Knights recorded his original song, "Just Like Me," in Ted Brinson's garage-based studio. Among the other records cut by Brinson was the Wipe Out album by the Impacts (a Del-Fi Records surf group). Meanwhile, that band had some dealings with Roger Hart, a Portland, OR radio DJ, who also managed Paul Revere and The Raiders. In 1965 "Just Like Me" was re-recorded the Raiders and relessed by Columbia (4 - 43461) becoming a national hit. Interestingly, on that single, the composer of the song Dey's was given co-composer credit along with Roger Hart.
