LOCATION: 12065 Beacon Avenue, Seattle.Seattle
OWNER(s): Ernie and Hazel Vigars
TIMESPAN: 1955-1957
MISC NOTES: Knotty (1955-1957) was the first label founded by Ernie & Hazel Vigars who later formed Embassy Records (1957) and Maverick Records (1959-1961). Drafting engineer Ernest Powell "Ernie" Vigars (d. 1962) and his pianist wife Hazel cut their own records as "Slide Rule and Blondie." Ernie had been active in the music scene since the 1940s and in late-1950 the couple helped found the Northwest Songwriters Inc. organization-- he served as president and she as secretary. Hazel also played piano on other artists records for their labels. Between 1955 and 1962 they recorded many sessions in their home studio and had the discs pressed in Hollywood by RCA. In 1957 Knotty advertised in Billboard magazine (July 15, 1957) that "Coming Soon" would be additional records by: Shirley Strand, The Three J's, Henry Day, John Engebretson, and Michele Morgan with Jerry Anderson.
