Light In The Attic

Light

LOCATION: Seattle, WA
OWNER(s): Matt Sullivan & Josh Wright
TIMESPAN: 2002...
MISC NOTES: Seattle’s remarkable Light In The Attic (LITA) company originally surfaced as a concert-production entity in 2001. Founder, Matt Sullivan, had grown up in Bellevue, Washington, where he and his buddy Josh Wright both enjoyed having evening shows on the tiny 10-watt radio station that operated at their high school. Sullivan honed an early dream of one day operating his own record label, and towards that end he learned the ropes of the music biz by serving as an intern at Seattle’s Sub Pop and Loosegroove labels. Situated in a basement in Seattle’s Freemont neighborhood, LITA benefited from the addition of Wright, who brought aboard his business acumen, and in late-2002 the company issued its first release. The duo’s focus was, as their website states, “to build a label which placed as much emphasis on releasing quality reissues as it did developing new talent.” LITA quickly gained a reputation for rediscovering long-lost recordings – ranging from Sixties soul and psychedelic gems, to obscure and ahead-of-their-times singer/songwriters, and folk and country classics. The amazingly successful label has also attracted fans to emerging artists including the Soul Investigators and the Black Angels. In addition, the enterprise has also launched new divisions, Modern Classic Recordings (in 2011) to re-release overlooked or neglected rock albums, and cinewax (in 2010) to market vintage and modern film soundtracks. But, locally, LITA’s initial claim to fame was their groundbreaking 2004 compilation disc, Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest in Funk & Soul 1965-75 – which forged a whole new listening audience for vintage tunes whose existence only a few record collectors had previously had any inkling of. That double-album’s popularity led to the production of an award-winning companion film (Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Forgotten Soul of the 1960s and ‘70s), some reunion shows by the reunited artists, a limited edition box-set of singles, and a follow-up set: Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle Funk, Modern Soul, & Boogie – Volume II 1972-1987. MISC NOTES: [From LITA website] "In 2004, Light In The Attic and DJ Supreme La Rock compiled the first ever set of vintage Pacific Northwest soul, funk, and R&B, Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-75 (LITA 009). Nearly a decade on, the Wheedle still grooves and with this we give you our most ambitious release to date. Over three years in the making, Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-79 is a lavishly packaged vinyl singles box set featuring ten impossibly rare 45s (some fetching thousands on the collector’s market) from Seattle’s vintage soul scene. Limited to only 2,000 hand-numbered copies worldwide, the ten 45 RPM set is housed in a gorgeous custom made magnetic flip-top box and features meticulously re-mastered audio and original label art. For those who must hear these vintage tunes and can’t relax with a tipple at the turntable, we’ve even included a free download card for all tracks. But wait, our love for Seattle soul could not rest there… we’ve included a massive 7″×7″ glossy 96-page book with new liner notes by Jonathan Zwickel that features new interviews with the regional musicians and key players, along with never before seen photos—from smokey Seattle clubs to Patrinell Staten singing at Jimi Hendrix’s funeral. Plus, a treasure trove of local music ephemera, a replica Seattle SuperSonics trading card, and countless archival gems. To round out this lavish set, we’ve also added a very special CD by Seattle soul titans Robbie Hill’s Family Affair: Gotta Get Back: The Unreleased L.A. Sessions, which though originally recorded in 1975, remained lost until the recent discovery of the original multi-track masters. The tapes were carefully mixed by renowned engineer and producer Steve Fisk. To say it’s a miracle that these tapes surfaced would be a massive understatement. A true love letter to Seattle and its Soul & Funk music scenes, Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-79 is a treasure not to be missed."

MISC NOTES: Reissue of two albums by Overton Berry's bands. [From LITA website] "At the dawn of the 1970s, Berry and company recorded 2 long player albums: The Overton Berry Trio At Seattle’s Doubletree Inn (1970) and T.O.B.E. (1972). Both take the listener to a time long forgotten, a place where music engaged, invited dialogue, and struck chords deep in one’s soul. In celebration of this still relevant sonic legacy, Light In The Attic Records will re-release the original At Seattle’s Doubletree Inn and T.O.B.E. (The Overton Berry Ensemble) albums in a lovingly packaged double vinyl-only reissue. Prominently featured on both of Light In The Attic’s Wheedle’s Groove releases and director Jennifer Maas’ Wheedle’s Groove documentary, the Overton Berry Trio and their transcendental interpretation of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” (from At Seattle’s Doubletree Inn) is notorious amongst forward thinking DJ’s and record collectors the world-over. The T.O.B.E. album (especially the break-beat heavy “Jesus Christ Superstar”) has also piqued the radar of many a tastemaker and original copies are virtually extinct and prohibitively priced when available in record dealer’s crates or offered for sale on the web. Now with lovingly remastered audio, extensive liner notes, and unpublished photos, this double L.P. set gives you both of the aforementioned rarities and the best of Overton Berry – that is, if you haven’t had the good fortune of seeing the man play live. Still performing his trademark blend of standards, thoughtful interpretations, and original compositions weekly in-and-around Seattle, if you find yourself music hungry in the Pacific Northwest, you just might have a chance. Berry is still doing his thing with the utmost respect and dedication to his craft."

MISC NOTES: [From LITA website] "Originally released in 1979, Dreamin’ Wild is the sonic vision of the talented Emerson boys, recorded in a family built home studio in rural Washington State. Situated in the unlikely blink-and-you-missed-it town of Fruitland and far removed from the late 1970s punk movement and the larger disco boom, Donnie and Joe tilled their own musical soil, channeling bedroom pop jams, raw funk, and yacht rock. Spurred on their high school’s music program, Donnie and Joe received a further push from their lifelong farmer father, who drew up a contract stating that he’d support his sons lofty ambitions with their very own recording studio as long as they focused on original material, sage advice for a man with zero experience in the music business. After taking out a second mortgage to help cover costs, Don Sr. also built his children a 300-capacity concert hall (dubbed Camp Jammin’) replete with ticket booth, stage, and fully functioning snack bar. The only problem was that the projected audience never quite materialized, despite a prime time TV profile titled The Rock And Roll Farmers from nearby Spokane, Washington. Even the Emerson brother’s school pals were nonplussed at their privately pressed long player; hand distributed to local music stores, but not as far as Seattle, five hours away from their rural home. Somewhat rejected by the muted response, but never surrendering, both Donnie and Joe continued down a musical path and are still active as performers today. This rare slice of bedroom-funk gets the usual Light In The Attic treatment with newly remastered audio, detailed liner notes, and expanded original album art with loads of photos from the Emerson’s collection."

MISC NOTES: [from LITA website] "...The former frontman of Screaming Trees, collaborator with Kurt Cobain and Queens Of The Stone Age,... and, most commonly, solo artist, Lanegan is a man whose career has been defined by an unwillingness to sit still. Light In The Attic are set to shine a spotlight on this great American performer and songwriter with the release of Has God Seen My Shadow? An Anthology 1989-2011. Collecting Lanegan’s solo material for Sub Pop, Beggars and more plus 12 unreleased tracks, this is the archive treatment Mark has long deserved. It is released in two sumptuous formats: a Double-CD edition with a gatefold, tip-on jacket and a 44-page booklet comprising hand-written lyrics and rare archive photos by Charles Peterson and Steve Gullick, and a Triple-LP box set, each LP in single pocket jackets within a heavy, tip-on slip case, with a 20-page book featuring the same attention to detail and extras as the CD release. The 32 tracks shine a light on Mark’s rare talent, and span the singer’s entire career, from 1990’s debut album The Winding Sheet to a treasure trove of recent unreleased gems and feature such guests as PJ Harvey, Josh Homme and J Mascis."

John Duval has stated that: "We made three trips to Seattle to record with Kearney and every trip was an experience but the last was the best. We set up, tune up and before the red light came on Kearney walks out to the studio floor and over to me, looks down and says, “ you finally got yourself a mans guitar kid”. I had brought a ‘66 Gibson Barney Kessel with me for that session and his comment was one of those moments I’ll never forget. Also on the session was Jim Valley who played a backing twelve string part. He was in the studio that day awaiting a phone call from Paul Revere telling him that he was formally in the Raiders.
