MISC NOTES: DEMO BREAKS PORTLAND MAMA: Some Four years ago the husband and wife team of Marv and Rindy Ross were kicking around the Portland music scene with a country swing act known as Beggar's Opera. Problem was, after about a year, the club market was getting to be a drag and country swing wasn't selling. What to do?  One option was to hang it up. Another was to take on a new sound and a  new image. Enter Seafood Mama, a rock act with a name derived from a lyric line in an old Fats Waller tune. From that point until early this year the band plugged along in the Portland area looking for a chance to make some kind of break.  A few demos were cut in the Ross' basement studio, but nothing seemed to really click. Then, Seafood Mama had a chance to perform on a local TV / FM simulcast concert and, says Marv, "with that opportunity for exposure (coming up), we thought now's the time to get a record out." Problem was, with only two weeks before the KOIN concert the band saw no way to get a record out. That's when Seafood Mama decided to take a chance. The group dusted off two tunes from their basement demo sessions and rushed them off to a pressing plant. The concert was played, the record came out shortly afterward and - bang! - Seafood Mama sound themselves one of the hottest acts throughout the Pacific Northwest . As for the songs on the successful single, Ross points to "Harden My Heart" as a mid-tempo shuffle / rocker with lyrical focus on woman asserting her independence. "City Of Roses", says Ross, is a ballad featuring the "old" Seafood sound. Inspired by a newspaper article, lyrically it speaks to "starting over" in a new city.
