You May Not Believe In Vains But You Cannot Deny The Terror
MISC NOTES: In the fall of 1979 three Roosevelt High School friends musically associated with a group called The Thankless Dogs made a split that led to a new musical entity, The Vains. That North Seattle threesome displayed their brand of "progressive punk" in a few appearances, laid down some tracks at American Music Recording and went their separate ways. Now, with the fruits of that recording effort available via Seattle's No Threes Records, Vains guitarist Chris "Chris Crass" Utting says the act is reuniting to try doing what they couldn't do before, namely, stay together. "Looking back", says Utting, "we were VERY young at the time the record was cut. I think it turned out so well it really scared us. We couldn't handle that, so we broke up." As for the recorded songs, Utting describes "School Jerks" as a heavy guitar, uptempo rocker that has dissatisfied high school students comment on the superficiality of their socio-educational status. "The Fake" continues Utting, is an even more uptempo, spontaneous piece concerned with a "phony person", while "The Loser" is an uptempo riff tune lyrically focusing on a former member of the band who "didn't work out."
