"DAVE LEWIS: THE FATHER OF NORTHWEST ROCK"
by Peter Blecha [Courtesy & copyright, 2008, HistoryLink.org]
Dave Lewis (1938-1998) was the singularly most significant figure on the Pacific Northwest's nascent rhythm & blues scene in the 1950s and 1960s. By 1955 he'd helped found Seattle's first notable teenage doo-wop vocal group (the Five Checks), by 1956 his Dave Lewis Combo (as progenitors of what would become known as the "Original Northwest Sound") began establishing themselves as the region's most musically influential ensemble. Then in the early 1960s the Dave Lewis Trio's infectious electric-organ-based instrumental compositions were fondly embraced by fans and fellow musicians -- including young Jimmy (aka "Jimi") Hendrix -- and after subsequently being recorded by such 1960s Northwest rock 'n' roll luminaries as the Kingsmen, Dynamics, Viceroys, Counts, Courtmen, Chosen Few, and Don and the Goodtimes, the tunes were firmly established as classic regional standards. Lewis went on to become an early inductee into the Northwest Area Music Associations' Hall of Fame in 1989. [READ MORE...]
Reminiscences:
"I watched Dave Lewis perform at Dave's Fifth Avenue, and DJ's. I believe I saw him first at the Downbeat in Seattle on a revolving stage. I would drive from Tacoma to Seattle every Saturday night to watch his group perform. There has never been a sound like the 'Dave Lewis Sound.'" - Mike Kupfer, November 2005 correspondence with pnwbands.com website [courtesy of webmaster Sam Carlson]
"In the summer of 1964, Dave Lewis, with the other two members of his trio, Joe Johanson, guitar, and Dickie Enfield, drums, left The Black & Tan to go to work at Dave's Fifth Avenue Club on 5th Ave. just off Denny Way. At that time, Mike Mandel got the gig at The Black & Tan. Mike was, and is, an incredible keyboard player. At the time he was playing Hammond B-3 with one Leslie speaker (he later had two Leslies) fashioned after combined styles of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Brother Jack McDuff, John Patton, etc. Mike was a big part of the Seattle jazz scene at the time and a member of The Seattle Jazz Society for whom he played many functions other than his gig at The Black & Tan. Mike was good friends with Don Stevenson (drummer) & Lee Parker (guitar) (both had been part of the Seattle R&B scene for several years) so he hired them to gig at the Black & Tan. Mike Mandel fronted the group until Don Stevenson left to go south to San Francisco. At that time, George Griffin, drummer extraordinaire, joined the group. With George's vocals and stage presence, he became the front man, and the organ trio became The George Griffin Trio. George had just come off the road with Lionel Hampton. He was with 'Hamp' eighteen months. Hamp called him 'Little Hamp.'" - From the memoirs of Lee Parker, provided courtesy of Patricia Hubbard (wife of Lee Parker), August 2011 correspondence with pnwbands.com website [courtesy of webmaster Sam Carlson]

Dave Lewis Returned to Seattle
Another combo that has earned national recognition is Dave Lewis. This group is made up of Dave Lewis on the organ, Joe Johansen playing lead guitar and Dick Enfield on the drums. Dave Lewis just returned from a playing engagement in San Francisco. Dave Lewis plays mainly for college students, but occasionally plays for a teen-age dance. MISC NOTES: "In the spring of '63 (Jerry) Dennon took Lewis's trio into Audio Recording. At the time.......(Seattle's ) KJR (radio) was hyping their air staff as the "Good Guys"; in an effort to win the station's support, Dennon got A & M to release one of the Trio's new instrumental tunes with the title "The Good Guys Theme." That scheme, however apparently failed to excite KJR: after only a few days, the single was withdrawn from the market ... In the meantime one KJR Good Guy DJ, Lan Roberts - who had a gift for coining inane buzzwords - had improvised some on-air tomfoolery about how any listener who sent him a postard would receive a "a little green thing with a duck on it" by return mail. Lo and behold, within days KJR was reportedly swamped with three thousand letters. Now Roberts had to make good on his promise. He promptly bought a bolt of green cloth, cut it into randomly shaped pieces, stamped them with the inked image of a duck, and mailed them out. (With all this going on) Dennon had A & M quickly rerelease "The Good Guys Theme" single under a new title: "Little Green Thing" ......Roberts responded by inviting the Dave Lewis Trio........onto his show where he debuted the record and even presented the musicians with their very own duck-stamped memento." MISC NOTES: "Good Guy's Theme" was named after the promotional tag for Seattle KJR radio's disc jockey crew, "The Good Guys." After briefly being issued under that title, the record was pulled from the market then re-released with "Good Guys Theme" renamed "Little Green Thing" -- which was a buzz-phrase then being hyped by KJR DJ Lan Roberts.

NOTE: "Three Dots": This song title references a young male, urban myth of the early 1960s. The paper labels on Olympia "stubby" beer bottles had one to four dots in a row on their backsides. If a label was presented to a young woman, she would - based on the number of dots - bestow certain sexual favors upon the presenter.
