WHITCOMB, IAN [UK]

Homebase: Woking, Surrey, England / Dublin, Ireland / Seattle, WA. / Los Angeles, CA.
Stats: 1941-2020
Misc Notes: As a lad in 1957, Ian Whitcomb played piano in a skiffle band, then a rock 'n' roll band in 1959, and then the Ragtime Suwanee Six with his brother    on drums. Then while attending college in Ireland, he helped found Dublin's pioneering R&B combo Bluesville. In the summer of 1963 he took a nationwide bus tour around the United States, and ended up in Seattle. He promptly got a job playing old-timey British "Music Hall" songs on the piano at the 92 Yesler folkie nightclub in the Pioneer Square neighborhood. One of the owners there advised him to go visit the local record label operator, Jerry Dennon, at the Jerden Records office. Dennon liked the kid and signed him to a recording contract, releasing the "Soho" single. Whitcomb then returned to Dublin where Bluesville recorded some songs, and Dennon got the Los Angels-based label, Tower Records, to release them as a single - with "This Sporting Life" becoming a minor west coast radio hit. Following that, Tower released "You Turn me On" which became a Top-10 hit all across America. In the summer of 1965 Whitcomb returned to the USA, began playing big concerts,  performed on big-time TV shows, eventually moved to Hollywood, and ended up forging a career recording for Tower, writing books and essays, and working as a pop music historian.
