Topaz Records

LOCATION: 622 Union St, Seattle / 2227 5th Ave., Seattle / 4718 38th Ave. N.E., Seattle
OWNER(s): Bud Busha (1958-1959) / Rick Wheeldon & Grant Hill (1959-1964) / Kearney Barton (Feb. 1964 - 1990)
TIMESPAN: 1958-1990
MISC NOTES: In 1960 Bob Reisdorff's Dolton Records moved into the old Electricraft / Northwest Recorders studio location at 622 Union in Seattle and provided space for another young label. Bud Busha ["boo-shay"] had a desk there for his Topaz label (Dolton moved Bud's  organ into the studio on the mezzanine level). Then, Bud sold the label to Rick Wheeldon -- boyfriend of the Fleetwoods' Gretchen Christopher -- and Grant Hill who worked from an office at 622. Unpaid recording bills eventually led Hill to give the label to recording engineer Kearney Barton of Seattle. Topaz soon became the "flagship," custom label at Barton's recording studio Audio Recording, Inc.

Early Topaz-issued songs were published using Reisdorff's Cornerstone (BMI) company. When Barton acquired the label he began using his own - Lamplighter Music (BMI) - publishing company. Visually, the label, as founded and inherited by  Barton, featured a  gold background. A stylized, longhand TopaZ  logo was written across the top of the label above the spindle hole. On 45s the tails of the letters T p and Z were cropped by the spindle hole. On small hole discs the word was intact. All lettering and numerals were black.  Later, some label backgrounds moved to darker gold or yellow. Throughout the Topaz label's history the format described above appeared on all small  hole discs. The same was true for 45s -- with three exceptions:

1.) #1347 featured the traditional Topaz  word logo, words and lettering on a blue label background
2.) #1335  featured a yellow label background with small, block lettered TOPAZ RECORDS centered above the spindle hole. All letters and numerals were black. This is one of only two disc-labels on which the word "records" appears.
3) #1348 featured a yellow label background with small, block lettered TOPAZ RECORDS centered above the spindle hole. All letters and numerals were black. This is one of only two disc-labels on which the word "records" appears.
NOTE: #1245 is the only known non-disc Topaz product.

MISC NOTES: Little Bill: "'Sweet Cucumber' was a dream. I just dreamt the title and then woke up in the middle of the night and thought it was a weird sounding name, so I wrote a song around it. Ron Peterson [of the Frantics] did the arrangement. 'Why Was I Ever Born' was supposed to be the one that sold, but it didn't work out. It had strings by some guy from the Seattle Symphony who came down and played on it. It was a ballad, a tear-jerker. I really did like that song, but it never caught on."

MISC NOTES: "Second 45 outing for a young woman born on the island of Susak in what is now Yugoslavia, but who now calls Seattle her home.  Ms. Picinich came to Puget Sound country via Italy with her family in the 1960s. As for her recordings, Judy emphasizes that she is not a professional performer, merely someone ho has enjoyed singing for her own pleasure and with church groups, so decided to make records for friend both here and overseas. In this vein, she made her first 4-song EP featuring "Tutte Le Mamme",  "Al Di La", "Nella Valle and "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" back in 1974 (Topaz Records TS - 1332 Seattle, WA.). Commenting on her second 4-song disc, she characterizes "Begging For My Love" as the melody to the popular Italian tune Tutte Le Mamme to which added original lyrics. As for " I Believe" and "Yours", she says they are two of her favorite American songs, while "Vecchio Scarpone" which is sung in  Italian, was popular in that country during the early 1950s. All four songs are mid-tempo ballads.[ NORTHWEST DISC-COVERIES & SOUND REPORT Volume 6 #4 June, 1981.]

MISC NOTES: "Solo debut for a thirty-seven-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist who got his musical start some ten years back when he formed a band called The Monks while with the Army in Germany. Returning to the Pacific Northwest, Dave worked as a single in lounges for a couple of years before hanging up his musical career to pursue other ventures. Now, he's back into music with a 45 rpm recording. As for his song choices, he describes "I Want The Right To Be Free" as an up tempo light rock number with lyrical content based on the personal experience of being stranded in Germany for six months while awaiting return to the U.S. "G. I. Blues", says Dave, is the old Elvis Presley tune with more of a '50s rock n' roll arrangement." The preceding originally appeared in NORTHWEST DISC-COVERIES & SOUND REPORT Volume 4 #9 November, 1979.

MISC NOTES: Black and white artist photo cardboard picture sleeve. Barie's Tavern Renton, Washington. "Singer/songwriter/guitarist Dale Marwood has been penning songs and performing around Puget Sound for years, Those same years have seen Dale issue a number of records either on his own or as a member of The Dirty Beaver Jug Band. His latest effort comes with Ambush, a country rock group that broke up a year before this, the act's first disc was released. As for a and that no longer exists putting out a record, Dale says it was done both for former Ambush members and as a memento for fans garnered by the act's year and a half of club dates in the community of Renton just south of Seattle. Marwood characterizes "It's Not Easy Havin' Fun" as an up tempo number with a definite country feel. A novelty tune, it lyrically deals with the humorous side of the morning after a weekend's partying. As for "I Can Get Off On You", Mr. Marwood says the tune, popularized by co-writers Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, was recorded because of its popularity with Ambush audiences. Compared to the original, Ambush's version is faster and features more vocal harmony." The preceding originally appeared in NORTHWEST DISC-COVERIES & SOUND REPORT  Volume 6 #1 March, 1981.

MISC NOTES: Henson was track announcer at the former Longacres horse racing track in Renton/Tukwila south of Seattle. "And There They Go" was a novelty number that mentioned a montage of names of real horses racing on the track during the late 1970s / early 1980s. However, permission had not been received from one or more horse owners to use their animal's name, so the disc was either released and pulled from the market or never "officially" issued.

MISC NOTES: "Life's experiences and a deep love of music have taken Sister Yvonne from a hobbiest's of musical interests to professional status within the field. Serving as choir director for St. John's Catholic parish in north Seattle, earlier this year the Sister released an alum of her original works titled "Chasing A Rainbow" (Topaz Records TLS - 1235 Seattle, WA).  With the eruption of Mt. St. Helens came the desire to release a tune about the event, a motivation which has lead to "Mountain Man."  Sister Yvonne characterizes the song as a thoughtful folk ballad focusing on the emotional bond that existed between Harry Truman and The Mountain, a relationship that was as strong as that between many humans. Chosen to accompany "Mountain Man" is "Cheer Up", a happy uptempo cut from the "Chasing A Rainbow" album. Sister Yvonne describes the tune as one of the most requested songs from the package." MISC NOTES: "Debut single from a thirty one year old singer/songwriter/guitarist long calling the Olympic Peninsula area of Washington State his home. After learning to play guitar and write songs in order to pursue a love of singing, Willie joined the ranks of professional performing some three years back and, most recently is found playing Peninsula area clubs with his country rock band Clearwater Junction. Still as a songwriter, he says one of the things he wanted to do most was record some of his original compositions. He saw that dream come true via Seattle's Audio Recording and Topaz Records. Commenting on his recordings, Willie characterizes "I Got Drunk"  as a mid-tempo country tune with "working man' lyrics. As for "Body Rhythm", the song is tagged as a danceable country rock number about a dancehall love affair." [NORTHWEST-DISCOVERIES & SOUND REPORT  Volume 7 #6 August, 1982.]

MISC NOTES: When Kearney Barton learned that the Beatles were to be holding a press conference, he grabbed a portable recorder and raced over to the Seattle Center Coliseum to record the event. Two decades later he dug that tape out and this limited edition (2000 discs) was the result. (Produced for the John Lennon Memorial Society of Portland Oregon, they confused things a bit by conflating Seattle's Memorial Stadium, with the Coliseum.)
