Golden Crest [NY]

Homebase: Huntington Station, NY
Owner(s):  Clark F. Galehouse

"Flagship" companion  to  Silver Crest and Shelley labels.

Company owner/operator Galehouse had his own styrene pressing operation. He  could  do pressings at any time. As a result, dead wax information could vary within a label design press run. Also, artists and song  titles could be "mixed and matched" on 45 rpm discs. (See #88602 Special)

As best as can be determined, for the most part,  during its early years Golden Crest did not issue many 45 rpm  discs with promo  labels. (See #518 [1.], #375 & #591). Only two discs from the early 1970s (#575 & #587) have been found in both promo and retail label designs.

Some early 45 rpms featured "artist photo" labels.
No known Golden Crest albums were issued with "artist photo" labels.

COLLECTOR'S ALERT:
Over the decades labels  on many  Golden Crest 45 rpm records  have tended to separate from the discs. In early 2022 one disc was found on-line purporting to be a "one-of-a-kind" copy of "Tall Cool One" without a B-side recording.

One sided discs do exist and, with Golden Crest having its own styrene pressing operation, the existence of such a disc seemed  plausible.  In this instance, however, such was not the case. The disc was merely lacking the B-side label.

MISC NOTES:

These two tracks were originally Issued on  an "artist photo"  picture label. The Wailers' picture was the "second pose" to be used on Golden Crest 45 rpm releases.*

The photo on the original  label shows guitarists Richard Dangel (far right) and John Greek (second from left) looking at one another toward the center of the band. This pic was taken in July, 1959 when the group appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand television program in Philadelphia, PA.

In the original shot, Clark is standing  with a microphone where the two guitarists are looking. He is facing Greek. As such, Greek, in particular, and also Dangel are looking toward Clark - with at least Greek -  responding to him during an interview. Drummer Mike Burke is standing in the background.

On the record label  Clark's image was removed. In his place, drummer, Mike Burke, is shown leaning forward over his drum kit.

"ROCK 'N' ROLL IS 'DISGUSTING'? (1959)"
by Peter Blecha

IN THE LATE 1950s there were still plenty of folks – especially established musicians – who were rock 'n' roll haters. The long list of nationally prominent stars who specifically dissed the music (& its fans) included bobbysoxer idol Frank Sinatra, classical cello master Pablo Casals – & the biggest A&R wig at the largest label in the world: Columbia Records' Mitch Miller. Even the greatest singing star to ever emerge from the Northwest – Bing Crosby – figured (as late as 1962) that, not to worry: rock music had already "run its course." [Read more...]
