THE WAILERS were a trend-setting group from Tacoma, Washington, that can rightfully be considered the premier band of the entire Northwest teen-scene of the 1950s and '60s. They initially performed saxophone-driven rock 'n' roll with a jazz-tinge as introduced on their debut hit from 1959, "Tall Cool One." The influential cover-art to their first album – The Fabulous Wailers – featured a classic photo of the band-members lined up with their instruments has been credited with helping establish a rather new concept in the rock realm: a band as a band, rather than one that backs a singer a la the Crickets (& Buddy Holly), or the Upsetters (& Little Richard).
In was 1957 when a few high school pals including John Greek (trumpet/flugelhorn) began jamming and doing a little gigging as the M-G Trio. By the following year the jams were attracting additional players and soon a quintet called the Nitecaps coalesced around Greek (rhythm guitar, trumpet), Richard Dangel (lead guitar), Kent Morrill (piano, vocals), Mark Marush (tenor sax), and Mike Burk (drums).

In late 1958, the group recorded a demo at Seattle's Commercial Productions studio of an original instrumental which Tacoma's restaurateur/ big-band leader Atillio "Art" Mineo steered to Clark Galehouse of New York-based Golden Crest Records. He liked the track and had it re-recorded by the band in Lakewood, Washington's Knights of Columbus Hall in February 1959. Released as a single, "Tall Cool One" reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #24 on the R&B chart.

record an LP, The Fabulous Wailers, which was released in December 1959 and featured two vocals by Morrill as well as instrumentals.A second instrumental from their first recording session, "Mau-Mau", made # 68 on the Billboard pop chart, but their third single, "Wailin'", failed to make the chart.
The band decided to return to the Northwest, rather than staying in New York as their record label wished, and they were dropped from their contract. Around the same time, they added lead vocalist "Rockin' Robin" Roberts, a charismatic frontman who had previously been the singer with rival Tacoma band the Bluenotes. In 1960 John Greek left the group in acrimonious circumstances, and was replaced by the Bluenotes' bassist John "Buck" Ormsby.
Daily Olympian, June 30, 1966
Roberts, Ormsby, and Morrill then formed Etiquette Records and, in 1961, the label released its first single, a cover version of Richard Berry's "Louie Louie". For contractual reasons the single was credited to Roberts, but was performed by the whole band. Their recording became a huge #1 regional radio hit and was distributed nationally by Liberty Records, but did not make the national chart. However, it inspired other countless other Northwest groups to perform – or even record as Portland's Kingsmen did – the same song.
The Wailers performed with Roberts and also with teenage girl singer Gail Harris, with both notably appearing on the classic album The Fabulous Wailers at the Castle, which was recorded in 1961. The band released four albums on their own Etiquette label between 1962 and 1966, as well as a series of singles. They also helped instigate the recording career of The Sonics, whose first two albums were issued by the label, and helped begin Jini Dellaccio's career as a rock 'n' roll photographer when they hired her to shoot cover photos for their album Wailers, Wailers, Everywhere.
Mark Marush left The Wailers in 1962 and was replaced by Ron Gardner, who also handled lead vocals; Dangel and Burk left in 1964 and were replaced by guitarist Neil Anderson and drummer Dave Roland respectively. Continuing to perform live as well as recording, the band added a trio of girl backing singers, known as the Marshans. Also in 1964, "Tall Cool One" was re-promoted by the Golden Crest label, and again made the Billboard pop chart, this time peaking at # 38.
In the spring of 1966 the Wailers caught a second wind scoring a west coast hit with the beautiful ballad, "It's You Alone," which through a licensing deal, jumped from Etiquette to the big-time United Artists label, but stalled out before catching on nationally – and then, in 1967, guitarist Neil Andersson was replaced by Denny Weaver. The band split up in 1969, by which time Kent Morrill was the only remaining original member.
Morrill, Dangel and Ormsby, with other musicians, reunited as The Fabulous Wailers* for occasional concerts from the 1970s onwards. In 1979, they joined with Burk, Gardner, and Gail Harris to play a reunion show. In the mid-1980s Ormsby re-established the Etiquette label – releasing reissues of the Sonics' LPs and a few other discs – and then released a Wailers compilation, The Boys from Tacoma, in 1993. The Wailers' song, "Out of Our Tree", was featured in the 1998 CD version of the Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era collection. Several of the Wailers' tunes were also covered by The Ventures, and the two bands released an album together, Two Band Garage, in 2009 to celebrate their 50 years in existence.
Roberts was killed, aged 27, in a late 1967 car crash. Ron Gardner perished in a a 1992 fire. Richard Dangel died of an aneurysm in 2002. John Greek died in 2006, Mark Marush in 2007, Kent Morrill died of cancer on April 15, 2011, and Buck Ormsby died of lung cancer on October 29, 2016.
* The band apparently never copyrighted the name "Wailers," During the years of their "retirement," Bob Marley and The Wailers emerged on the international scene. Returning to performing in the 1970s Tacoma's Wailers adopted the name of their first LP - The Fabulous Wailers - as their moniker.
NOTE: Many of the titles listed in the discography below are now available on CD packages from the United Kingdom, Australia, etc..
MISC NOTES: This recording was the first ever by the Wailers. Tacoma bandleader and operator of the New Yorker restaurant, Art Mineo, was acting as their unofficial manager / mentor and he arranged for the session. When the band had completed recording the tune, Mineo thought it needed something extra in order to become a hit. He ran down the street to a nearby bar and got a pitcher of water, and a tumbler full of ice, and returned. Then, they rolled the tape while he intoned into the microphone: "Eh goomba: How about a nice tall cool one?" in his thickest New York / Italian accent. He proceeded to also record the sound of water pouring into that glass of ice. This was then grafted onto the song as an intro. The band ended up re-recording the song as "Tall Cool One" in 1959 and it quickly became their first hit.

"Artist photo" picture label. The Wailers' picture was the "second pose" to be used on Golden Crest 45 rpm releases.
The photo shows guitarists Richard Dangel (far right) and John Greek (second from left) looking at one another toward the center of the band. This pic was taken in July, 1959 when the group appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand television program in Philadelphia, PA.
In the original shot, Clark is standing with a microphone where the two guitarists are looking. He is facing Greek. As such, Greek, in particular, and also Dangel are looking toward Clark - with at least Greek - responding to him during an interview. Drummer Mike Burke is standing in the background.
On the record label Clark's image was removed. In his place, drummer, Mike Burke, is shown leaning forward over his drum kit.

Don Blocker with the Promotion Dept. at Liberty Records: "(In 1961) Liberty had (distribution for) the original rock version of 'Louie, Louie.' It was on Etiquette Records by (Rockin' Robin Roberts and) the Wailers. I bought the master because it was selling in the Northwest. But I couldn't convince anyone to go out and work it, especially Bob Skaff, who was head of promotion at the time. He said 'It's a white group, but they sound R & B, I can't promote that.' He wouldn't work it, and he didn't work it. Then (in 1963) the Kingsmen came out with an identical version. Our version was first, and (in 1964) I got it released on [the] Imperial album [Tall Cool One LP-9262] but (again) could not convince anyone that it was a hit."
