The Great Northwest Music Co.

LOCATION: Seattle, WA
OWNER(s): Gerald "Jerry" Dennon
TIMESPAN: 1976 - 1981
MISC NOTES: During the mid 1970s, as he had done in the '60s, Jerry Dennon began to once again  become a "serious" player in the Pacific Northwest recording / record scene. The Great Northwest Music Co. superseded Jerden Records, and preceded First American Records as his flagship label. Some Great Northwest Music Co. releases would feature recordings of vintage interviews by Vancouver BC radio DJ Red Robinson with non-Northwest artists. Those are noted directly below, while the Northwest-associated artists and their recordings are detailed further below that.

  • 4005: Elvis Presley - The Elvis Tapes [1977]
  • 4006: Elvis Presley - The King Speaks [1977]
  • 4007: The Beatles - Beatle Talk [1978]
  • 4014: Buddy Holly - Visions of Buddy Holly [1980]
  • 4015: Red Robinson - Interview With Red Robinson [1981]
  • 4016: Gene Vincent - Gene Vincent Interview With Red Robinson [1981]

MISC NOTES: The City Limits was the final name for a group that started out in 1962 as The Imperials. It then went through name changes such as Rocky & His Friends and Rocky & The Riddlers. The band assumed the City Limits moniker only after having been instructed to 'cease and desist' using their "Rocky" identities - "What's up with that Bullwinkle?" - by cartoon magnates Hanna-Barbera. When "Tossin' & Turnin' " was recorded the group was still named The Imperials. The track was never issued in 45 rpm format. "Tossin' & Turnin' " first appeared on the (Panorama 103) Battle Of The Bands compilation LP in late 1966 . By that time the band was known as The City Limits. The song later appeared as Side One, Track #4 on the compilation album The History Of Northwest Rock Vol. IV (The Great Northwest Music Co. #1040, 1982)

MISC NOTES: Premier in the nascent Northwest's teen-dance scene set list for young bands during the early 1960s was the Dave Lewis instrumental composition "J.A.J."  Lewis informed that the song was named for an early - and undependable -  Lewis Combo guitarist, Jerry "Jive Ass Jerry" Allen. It was popularized , recorded  and issued by Seattle's Dynamics (Seafair-Bolo # 45-730, and Seafair #107). The Kingsmen's  "J.A.J."  first appeared in 1964 as side 2, track #4 on their debut LP The Kingsmen In Person featuring Louie, Louie (Wand #657).

MISC NOTES: Test pressing with a blank white jacket (with a type-writer written ID label at top right corner) exists, but an official commercial release seems to never been issued. The artist and song selections seem weird, non-chronological, and with no evident theme. The songs range from Little Bill's 1959 love ballad right up to the Raymark's garage rock, and then off to Brave New World's psychedelia, and Bluebirds' pastoral country rock. Maybe the concept was: a collection of leftover odds-&-ends -- plus one legit hit: Little Bill's. There is no Great Northwest Music Co. info on labels, just this pressing plant info: H.V. Waddell Co., 231 West Olive Avenue, Burbank California 91501. Update: It has been confirmed that this album was released in cassette tape format. This disc was originally owned by Buck Ormsby. It then went to Jeff Miller's collection. It is now in the NWMA's permanent collections.

Side A
1.) Brave New World "It's Tomorrow"
2.) Little Bill & The Bluenotes "I Love An Angel"
3.) Juveniles "Bo Diddley"
4.) Bandits "Queen Jane"
5.) Bluebird "Billy Drake"

Side B
1.) Little John & the Monks "Needles & Pins"
2.) New Yorkers "Again"
3.) Raymarks "Louise"
4.) Beachcombers "The Wheeley"
5.) Doug Robertson & the Goodguys "Desiree"
