"SEAFAIR RECORDS: SEATTLE'S SWINGIN' '60s MUSIC COMPANY"
by Peter Blecha
[Courtesy & copyright, 2008, HistoryLink.org]

Of all the Pacific Northwest’s pioneering record companies, it was Seafair Records that perhaps best embodied Seattle’s innocent early days when a good honest effort would bring success. A true “mom and pop” enterprise long run by founders Tom and Ellen Ogilvy, Seafair (and its associated imprints Seafair-Bolo, Virgelle, and NOLTA Records) can, among other achievements, be credited with issuing the most consistent stream of high-quality 1960s rockin’ teen-R&B of any label in the region. LABELOGRAPHY DETAILS:

  • Seafair-Bolo Records was a sister label to the original SEAFAIR Records. The Bolo name was added by conflating portions of the principals' surnames, BOLes & Ogilvy = "BOLO."
  • Seafair-Bolo: Retail discs featured an eye-catching bright orange label background. The word SEAFAIR in black was at  the top center of the spindle hole. Below SEAFAIR  was  the word  BOLO in extra large white letters with black edging.  Beneath SEAFAIR, in extra large white letters edged in black was the word BOLO. Centered beneath BOLO and above the spindle hole was the distinctive image of a scimitar - or bolo - knife. Finally, to the lower right of the bolo's tip  and upper right of the spindle hole, was the word  (<) reCORds (>). The word (<) reCORds (>) as well as all other numerals and lettering were in black. Disc #s were right center of spindle hole.
  • "Northwest" Seafair-Bolo A - B promotional discs featured the same design format as described above. However, the label background was white  with a black outline around around BOLO and the knife image. As with retail discs, all other numerals and lettering were black.
  • Compared to their Northwest counterparts, Seafair-Bolo A - B "national" retail labels featured a dark red label background with no logo and black numeral and lettering
  • With two known exceptions, "national" A - B promotional discs featured the same graphics and numeral / lettering pattern as their retail counterparts, but in a black - on white format. Also present were the words "PROMOTIONAL NOT FOR SALE."
  • There are only four known examples of Northwest label design promos. They are Seafair-Bolo #s 743 (although this disc was also distributed nationally), 756, 760 and 761. According to Jim Ogilvy, the paucity of black on white Northwest promotional labels can likely be attributed to the fact that his mother, Ellen Ogilvy, did not like them. She thought they looked "cheap."
  • Numbers 760 and 761, the final releases on the label, were the only two 45s with consecutive numbers to feature the Northwest promo format.

MISC NOTES: "Hey Mrs. Jones" appears to have been first issued as a recording via the 1951/'52 release of the song  by Jimmy Forrest and Orchestra (United #1107) in 78 rpm and 45 rpm formats.  It next surfaced as a 45 in 1961:  "Hey Mrs. Jones Pt. 1" /  "Hey Mrs. Jones Pt. 2"  by The Check Mates (Arvee  #A 5030). This Tiny Tony, Merrilee, and the Statics arrangement features Smith carrying on a patter/rap conversation with "Mrs. Jones" (Statics' keyboardist Merrilee Gunst). In 1962 there was a pressing made by a plant other than Monarch in Los Angeles -- then, in 1963, Monarch began pressing the discs.

Jimmy Hanna and Dynamics
The Dynamics have earned the reputation for being one of the best bands in the Northwest. Jimmy Hanna takes care of their vocals. Mark Doubleday plays the trumpet, Ron Woods is their drummer, Jeff Afdem is on sax, and his brother Terry is on the piano. Harry Wilson plays the lead guitar and Gary Snyder is on the bass. The Dynamics started their march to fame in 1959 when they played with "Aces Up." Since then they have come up with many hits, including "Talk (sic Tough*) Talk" which is part of most bands' repertoire.(The Grizzly, Seattle's Queen Anne High School newspaper 12/18/1964 p.2)

"No Doubt About It" album reissues:
1965.) Side Two Track #5 on compilation LP Bolo Bash......Volume Number 1 (Seafair-Bolo Records BLP 8002)

MISC NOTES: Formed in Spokane, Washington in 1959-1960 as The Demons, the summer of 1964 saw the five-man ensemble -- composed of: Ned Neltner (guitar); Hal Lotzenhiser (bass); Les Clinkingbeard (sax); Mike Clothier (keyboards); and Mike Buono (drums) -- re-establishing itself in the eastern Washington teenage dance scene after a year's venture into the adult-oriented club market around Portland, Oregon. Additionally, the group was recovering from the shock of a tragic automobile accident that had taken the life of a Mark V member only a few months earlier. To facilitate the transition to dances and to promote the Mark V name adopted while in the club circuit, the group released  a record on the Seattle based Seafair-Bolo label. Feature side of the disc was a straight forward, driving rendition of the Jessie Hill rhythm and blues classic "Ooh  Poo Pah Doo." Ned Neltner comments: "Every place we played 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo' went over like...gangbusters. About that time, the Kingsmen were using a simulated live recording technique so we got about thirty five of our friends, went into Sound Recorders in Spokane and did 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo' with that sort of sound. " As for his composition on the flip side Neltner says: "To me its a typical......Northwest rock n' roll song, something like The Viceroys' 'Granny's Pad' with lyrics, a 'Hey, Mrs. Jones' (Tiny Tony with The Static) sort of a pattern (or) a lot of Dynamics and Wailers material around at the time." As for the fate of the record, he continues, "It really didn't sell....but it got a lot of airplay (which) made a name for us and got a whole lot of jobs." Those jobs were not to be limited to the eastern portion of our state. The Mark V was to become one of the few eastern Washington  rock bands to establish itself west of the Cascades with any degree of success. The Mark V tradition carries on to this day with Seattle's Jr. Cadillac.
